Received a nice e-mail yesterday from the editors of Allegory informing me that my short story, “Come You Back to Mandalay,” will appear in their May 2010 issue.
Allegory is a great magazine with a tough review process, and I’m happy that this particular story found a home there. It’s a little different from my usual fare–an adventure set in 1930’s Burma, where a big-game hunter and his loyal retainer stalk a legendary beast that proves to be all too real. It started life in a Liberty Hall story-writing challenge that asked us to use Max Ehrmann’s Desiderata as our inspiration. Each section of my original draft began with a stanza from the poem, and though the poetry is no longer there, the inspiration remains. Read the story next month and see if you can make the connection.
