Scribbler’s Scoreboard, April ’09

April was a dreary month all the way around. Work and personal life issues demanding immediate attention took a big upswing, culminating in mid-month with what I will forever after remember as “The Week From Heck.” Despite the challenges, I stayed in the hunt, writing (and rewriting) as best I could.

Sigh. Sometimes you get the bear, sometimes the bear gets you.

Good news: “The Time Share” debuted online in Brain Harvest and “Our Lady of Chagrin appeared in print mag Beyond Centauri this month. Five submissions went out, three of which were new stories.

Bad news: Five rejections back.

The April Scoreboard:

2 Apr: “Weightless” submitted to The Drabblecast.

5 Apr: “Insubstantiation” submitted to Flashquake.

7 Apr: “Come You Back to Mandalay” submitted to Three-Lobed Burning Eye, “the magazine that monsters like to read.” Heh.

11 Apr: 9-day rejection from The Drabblecast for “Weightless.”

16 Apr: 43-day rejection from Asimov’s for “An Eternal, Unbroken Chain.” Yeah, it was a long shot.

17 Apr: 106-day rejection from Flash Fiction Online for “A Quiet Afternoon at the Alabaster County Ladies’ Sewing Circle and Patchwork Society.” Made it to the second round of review, beating 85% of their other subs. Progress.

18 Apr: “An Eternal, Unbroken Chain” submitted to Atomjack.

18 Apr: “A Quiet Afternoon at the Alabaster County Ladies’ Sewing Circle and Patchwork Society” submitted to Ruthless Peoples Magazine.

21 Apr: 3-day rejection from Ruthless Peoples Magazine for “A Quiet Afternoon at the Alabaster County Ladies’ Sewing Circle and Patchwork Society.” Well, they’re Brits, so the Southern U.S. culture stuff might not have resonated with them.

22 Apr: 291-day rejection from Tower of Light Fantasy for “The Curse.” New time-in-slush record!

Still awaiting responses from Doorways Magazine for “Prison Dreams,” Escape Clause for “At My Table,” and Every Day Fiction for “A charl13brn Turing Test.”

“One Smile at a Time” will appear in Mindflights soon, date to be announced.

“The Silver Tree” is scheduled for publication in Kaleidotrope, Dec 2009/Jan 2010.
